National Bee, Inc., a Delaware-based non-profit organization founded in 2003, is the first online educational tournament. National Bee is an outgrowth of the development of Numbers Challenge and Numbers
Bee by Vel
Micro Works in the years 2000-2003.
Attracting students to mathematics and technology while also teaching useful skills is no easy feat in elementary and middle schools. Numbers Bee is a computer-based interactive and educational resource that not only motivates students on an individual basis, but also offers the excitement of competition. The incentive of competition and the levels of increasingly challenging material have kept students hooked on the Numbers Bee from elementary school through middle school, during the very time when students’ engagement and motivation in school normally decline due to peer influences.
Numbers Bee is an online program that encourages students to use their mathematic prowess to solve equations, with the entire process framed as a computer game. Students choose from the numbers and operators provided, trying to find the form that correctly equals the desired solution. Students can immediately gauge their performance by the immense variety of problems that the program offers as well as the built-in timer. The program builds mental math skills by providing students with an intuitive feel for numbers, teaching them to eliminate incorrect combinations of numbers and operators quickly. With the push of individual improvement or group competition, students try to find the quickest solution, leading them to more difficult levels and complex solutions.
Academic nationwide competitions from other disciplines have grown in prominence. The Spelling Bee draws nationwide media attention in the spring; the Geography Bee tests students’ knowledge of geography and current events. Until recently, there was no competition to challenge and stimulate the interest of students in mathematics, and Numbers Bee, the first online math tournament, fills this gap. Numbers Bee allows players to compete with each other over the Internet without having to be in the same location. With the growth in the availability of access to the Internet and the language of mathematics that transcends national boundaries, Numbers Bee has the potential to assist and challenge students globally.
We plan to conduct our ninth state-wide Numbers Bee in Delaware on at A.I. duPont High School in Greenville which will be in a convenient venue for all students in the state. This is a grade-wide competition that is open to public, private, and parochial school students as well as home-schooled students. It is our vision to scale this tournament to a nation-wide event in the upcoming years.
We are seeking sponsorship of this event from public and private organizations and individuals. Please make your tax free contribution check payable to National Bee, Inc.
